Summary

Terror has a new sound 。 。 。 and it comes from the darkest corners of James Patterson's imagination。

Young sisters, Sophie and Tennant Riggin, are the only two people to withstand a massive explosion that destroys their community, located in the shadow of Oregon's Mt。 Hood。

A team of elite government investigators are sent to research the fallout and the girls - why did only they survive? - but with conflicting objectives。 For Dr Martha Chan, a psychologist who analyses large-scale medical emergencies: study them。 For Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Fraser, a career military leader with an inherent mistrust of civilians: contain them

But as the disturbance replicates across the Pacific Northwest, it threatens to topple the chain of command。 Dr Chan and Lieutenant Colonel Fraser are caught between the perpetrators of the threat - and those who have the power to resist。

Not one of my favorite by PattersonI feel like the ending was flat。 I expected more from this book。 It reminded me of Cell by Stephen King。

While I don't read sci-fi, I had to read this book because JD Barker co-authored。 I have to agree with other reviewers that I would read anything he writes。 He stands on his on and above many other authors including Patterson。 Sorry JD, this one just didn't have it。 I look forward to anything like the 4MK series or Caller's Game。 You got your own style and don't need Patterson。。。。。 While I don't read sci-fi, I had to read this book because JD Barker co-authored。 I have to agree with other reviewers that I would read anything he writes。 He stands on his on and above many other authors including Patterson。 Sorry JD, this one just didn't have it。 I look forward to anything like the 4MK series or Caller's Game。 You got your own style and don't need Patterson。。。。。 。。。more

Read only a few chapters。 Not the thriller I thought it would be it’s more of a supernatural and bizarre non-reality type of book a little bit like Dean Koontz and not really my kind of interest。 So no rating for me just not my kind of book。

Deborah Sondock

Not a typical Patterson bookI found the story difficult to connect with。 The characters were not fully developed and the mystery lasted until the very end of the book。 Many of the images created by the words were extremely disturbing。 Definitely my least favorite book I have read by James Patterson。

Absolutely outstanding!!!! Once I started this book I didn’t want to put it down! I was squirming in my seat and turning the pages as fast as I could read them! Horror story, apocalyptic & thriller all combined for one hell of a book! Definitely one of my faves for this year and of JP!

Sorry James Patterson! I done you wrong, but I acknowledge my error by giving you a fulsome five stars for ‘The Noise’。* Thanks to Random House UK and Netgalley for the ARC。 。。。more

Frankly this book scared me。 Will I say why? Nope, but I can say it had had me hooked from page one。 Right up until the end I had no idea what was causing the things that were happening to happen。 And the ending? WOW。 Just be prepared to have a hard time putting this book down!

This is not your grandmother's James Patterson。 When partnered with J。D。 Barker, Patterson's work is elevated to another level。 Barker readers will know better than to get too attached to any single character。 Like in his previous work, The Noise creates a world where no one is safe。 This is not your grandmother's James Patterson。 When partnered with J。D。 Barker, Patterson's work is elevated to another level。 Barker readers will know better than to get too attached to any single character。 Like in his previous work, The Noise creates a world where no one is safe。 。。。more

Whenever you put two brilliant minds together like those of perennial best-selling author James Patterson and one of the boldest new voices in thriller fiction, J。D。 Barker, you just know sparks are going to fly。 These two authors are clearly comfortable sharing the load with their latest effort entitled THE NOISE as they had a big hit with their debut collaboration last year, THE COAST-TO-COAST MURDERS。Our world was forever changed by the still burgeoning COVID-19 Pandemic, and it has changed o Whenever you put two brilliant minds together like those of perennial best-selling author James Patterson and one of the boldest new voices in thriller fiction, J。D。 Barker, you just know sparks are going to fly。 These two authors are clearly comfortable sharing the load with their latest effort entitled THE NOISE as they had a big hit with their debut collaboration last year, THE COAST-TO-COAST MURDERS。Our world was forever changed by the still burgeoning COVID-19 Pandemic, and it has changed our sensibilities and personal thresholds accordingly。 Therefore, when you get a novel that hints at a potential world-changing event like the one we have here in THE NOISE, it is amazing how quickly our minds accept what might have once been viewed as a far-fetched plot and now can see it as something that highly likely could happen in our lifetime。 Personally, I hope the horror that Patterson and Barker dreamt up remains within the pages of a fictional psychological thriller。It begins with two sisters, sixteen-year-old Tennant and her pre-teen sibling, Sophie。 They are all that is left from a community of survivalists living somewhere in the woods on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon。 They are fourth-generation survivalists, but nothing they have done or seen up to this point in their young lives would have prepared them for the genocidal horror that claimed nearly a thousand people from their community and left only them alive。 Sophie is the more sensitive of the two and can still hear the noise and the screaming which are at an almost deafening level for her。To battle the mysterious and invisible enemy that claimed all these lives requires a team of special individuals。 This small team is brought together quickly and violently by our government and the eight who were chosen are flown by military helicopters to an unknown location on the outskirts of the Oregon woods where the mass-extermination event took place。 A key member of this team is Dr。 Martha Chan and many of the chapters in THE NOISE are told by her point of view。 The reader gets to experience what she experiences as she goes from being a frightened outsider to a horrified insider in battling this unknown menace。She is joined by an astrophysicist named Russel Fravel, an expert in planetary biology named Dr。 Breanna Hauff, a British climatologist named Sanford Harbin, an agriculturalist named Dr。 Joy Reiber, and a geologist from NASA named Dr。 Brian Tomes。 I began to get a feeling like I did when I first read the late Michael Crichton’s THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN where a group of various global experts were called upon to save the world from an unexplainable threat。 From the choppers the damaged area looks like it had been hit by a tornado, but this group knew they had not been brought together to investigate a tornado strike。Once the culprit turns out to be a noise-related enemy it makes the experts look to point blame in the expected directions --- towards the Russian and Chinese governments。 It is surmised that nearly all electronic devices in the world contain some items created in China --- what if there had been a plot to have these items turn on us with a killer auditory wave? These paranoid fears are never proven, but they are enough to give any rational person nightmares。One significant finding is that those effected by the noise begin to exhibit abnormally high body temperatures to the point where they are practically cooking from the inside out。 The question remains why Tennant and Sophie were spared。 Sophie is caged for observation and keeps blurting out odd terms --- one of her favorites being Anna Shim。 The team begins to wonder who this Anna Shim might be。 It is only later that someone realizes she is not saying the name of a person but a term --- Anahshim --- which in ancient Aramaic means people。 Someone else notes that in biblical terms this word also references an ancient demon。The question becomes: How can you outrun sound? As the team races against the clock for a solution to this problem the President of the United States, aboard Air Force One, is being encouraged to unleash a nuclear strike on the area in Oregon that has now grown an undetermined amount of ‘infected’ who are burning up from the deadly noise and may be highly contagious。 This would cost over a million lives, but the problem may be squashed by this powerful nuclear response。THE NOISE is the perfect thriller novel for modern times and an ideal summer page-turner。 Patterson and Barker are able to keep things moving at a rapid pace while also keeping things subtle and never going over-the-top or campy with the potential extinction-level event they have created。 Reviewed by Ray Palen for Book Reporter 。。。more

For me, it was a bust。 It starts out barreling at me at 100 mph and never stopped。 You never have time to ponder on things before the next boulder runs you over。 I found no likable characters and in the case of the youngest survivor, she totally creeped me out。 That could be because the narrator used a creepy voice that will give me nightmares! I would still recommend you give it a spin but I won’t be looking for any sequels。
